Top Five: Current British TV Series That Have Ruined Me For All Other TV - Downton AbbeyCora: I might send her over to visit my aunt. She could get to know New York.Lady Grantham: Oh, I don’t think things are quite that desperate. If you know me, you know my soft spot for all things period piece, particularly those that come to us in the States courtesy of Masterpiece Theater. Rigid class systems examined within the microcosm of a Manor home in which longing looks, stolen glances and hand holding are the equivalent of hot and heavy foreplay….where do I sign up? Thankfully, however, Downton Abbey is more than just its lovely period window dressing, it is wonderful character drama set against the backdrop of the changing tides of the early 20th Century with lots of soapy twists. With a large cast, every character is given a moment to shine and while most are not fully fleshed out, I still care about each and every one of them with a devotion that is just a tad bit surprising. Why do I care about Mary’s happiness so much? Why do I worry about Sybil? Oh god, why must Gwen leave? Why isn’t Thomas dead yet? As the characters ended the first series on a straight collision course with World War I, I find myself worrying even more for the fate of my beloved characters in the next series. If anything happens to Matthew, I will cry. Downton Abbey also reminds me that with every generation, the future is hopelessly uncertain and scary. The most important constant is family and the place we call home.
